Family Style Guide
for a park location with lots of greenery

I want Mom to feel like the heart of her family photos. She is always taking the photos and rarely in pictures with her beautiful family. So when styling your family, I recommend selecting Mom's outfit first and then building the rest of you family's wardrobe around Mom's clothing color. Here are my major tips for wardrobe selection:

  • Each family member should be wearing different clothing colors. No matching colors or styles. Clothing colors should be complementary (examples below).

  • Moms and daughters photograph beautifully in dresses and skirts because dresses convey visual flow and movement.

  • Everyone should be in contrasting light and dark colors; ie, mom and daughters should not all wear dark color or similar color dresses or clothing, and guys should not all wear a dark color shirt.

  • Guys should wear varying pants colors; ie, one in dark jeans, one in light jeans, one in gray jeans, one in black jeans, one in khakis, one in beige cords.

  • Vary the shirt styles for guys; ie, one in a blue or beige t-shirt, one in a flannel, one in a henley, one in a solid button-down.

  • No neon or bright pink colors and no clothing with words or logos please.

  • No stripes or busy patterns

  • Think about accessories like boots, jewlelry like bracelets or rings, hats, scarves.

  • Ladies have nails nicely manicured

  • Think about including one outfit with texture like ruffles, velvet, corduroy

COLOR PALETTE #1
Women in one dark dress, one light dress, one medium color dress in shades of burgundy or coral/peach and white or light brown. Stick to only one dress with a pattern.
Men in varying shades of beige, blue, and light brown.
All of these example dresses are from Amazon. The men's clothing is from Amazon and Old Navy. For my family photos, I usually order several sizes, styles, and colors of clothing for everyone. We try everything on, make selections, and then return the clothing that does not work out.
 

COLOR PALETTE #2
Women in one dark dress, one light dress, one medium color dress in shades of gold, white, black, and royal blue. However, don't include both a white and a black dress. Stick to only one dress with a pattern.
Men in varying shirt shades of beige, gray, blue, and soft brown.
